Zen master in Australia (Mysterious Cloud Bodhi Ken)
Carl Hooper began his Zen training in 1988 with Master AMA Samy at a sesshin in Australia. In 1990 Carl stayed with the master at Bodhi Zendo, then part of Dhyana Ashram in Madras, India.
After Bodhi Zendo moved to its present location in the mountains of Tamil Nadu, south-west of Chennai, Carl’s training included extended stays there with Master AMA and members of the world-wide sangha. In December 2013, Zen Master AMA Samy acknowledged him as a Bodhi Sangha teacher, and then on 5th October 2016, recognised him as an Independent Master.
Carl Hooper has postgraduate degrees in philosophy (PhD New England University, M.Phil. University of Sydney). The title of his doctoral dissertation is Kōans: the Philosophical Investigations of Zen. He also has a background in monastic studies, having spent several years at Tarrawarra Abbey, a Cistercian monastery in Australia. Before entering the monastery, Carl studied painting and drawing at the Julian Ashton Art School, Sydney.
